The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command on Monday kicked off activities for the 2026 National Police Day celebration with a sanitation exercise and free medical outreach in Garki, Area 1, Abuja.

The initiative, led by the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammad, saw officers and residents participate in a coordinated cleanup of the area, alongside the provision of basic healthcare services to members of the community.

According to the command, the exercise forms part of efforts by the police to improve community relations and promote public health, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said the outreach also reflects a broader strategy to position the police as a people-oriented institution amid ongoing concerns about policing standards in the country.

Residents who benefited from the medical outreach reportedly commended the initiative, describing it as timely given the rising cost of healthcare and limited access to basic services.

The police, however, framed the programme as part of its corporate social responsibility, noting that the activities are designed to strengthen trust between law enforcement and the public while encouraging environmental responsibility.

The National Police Day celebration is expected to continue with a series of events across the country, as authorities seek to highlight reforms and improve the image of the force, which has faced persistent criticism over allegations of misconduct, corruption, and human rights violations.
