The Kano State Police Command has impounded 104 commercial motorcycles and 68 tricycles, and arrested 172 suspects for violating the state government’s ban on commercial motorcycle operations and restrictions on tricycle movements within the metropolis.
The arrests were made during a joint enforcement exercise carried out between January 1 and January 7, 2026, in collaboration with other security agencies.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, who said the suspects were apprehended for flouting the ban on passenger conveyance by motorcycles, popularly known as Achaba or Okada, as well as the restriction on tricycle operations between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
Kiyawa said all the suspects have been charged to court for prosecution, adding that the enforcement exercise was aimed at strengthening public safety and maintaining law and order in the state.
Commending residents for their cooperation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, noted that public support was crucial to the success of the operation. He also praised the combined security agencies involved, particularly the Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA), for their dedication to enforcing the regulations.

The police reiterated that the ban on commercial motorcycles and restrictions on tricycle movements remain in force across affected local government areas, including Kano Municipal, Gwale, Dala, Fagge, Nassarawa, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo (Jido area), and parts of Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, namely Tamburawa, Gurjiya, and Jido wards.
