The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading a viral video alleging an ongoing terrorist attack in Abuja.

The command said the video, which claimed that terrorists were advancing on the nation’s capital with heavy gunfire, was deliberately fabricated to incite panic among residents.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, had ordered a forensic analysis to track the origin of the video and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

According to the statement, there is no record of any terrorist attack or security breach in Abuja or any part of the FCT, contrary to the claims in the circulating footage.

The police explained that preliminary investigations revealed that the gunshot sounds in the video were edited from an unrelated source and superimposed on footage of an unidentified location, which showed buildings under construction and bore no connection to Abuja.

“The claim is false, misleading, and deliberately designed to incite panic and misinform members of the public,” the statement said.

The command warned content creators and social media users against spreading unverified information capable of causing fear and public disorder.

It also urged residents to disregard the video and refrain from sharing such content, stressing that it was the handiwork of individuals with mischievous intentions.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring residents of sustained efforts to maintain security and provide accurate information.
