The Taraba State Police Command has dismissed allegations that officers from the Takum Division, and the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) are extorting and undue harassing residents of Barkin-Lissa in Takum Local Government Area of the state.

A statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullah Usman, said the accusations stemmed from a communal clash between youths from Gattati and Barkin-Lissa communities.

He said the conflict, which occurred on December 12, 2024, led to the destruction of public and private properties, including signposts for schools, churches, hospitals, and police installations.

Several people were reportedly injured during the crisis.

Usman added that following a formal complaint by Japheth Sanda, a councillor representing Shibong Ward, officers from the Takum Police Division, intervened, and apprehended suspects alleged to have instigated the violence.

According to him, community leaders, including the traditional ruler of Takum, Sopiya Gboshi, and the local government council Chairman, John Danjuma, thereafter pleaded for the release of the arrested suspects by the police.

“A peace agreement was later reached, mandating Gattati community to compensate Barkin-Lissa with ₦1. 2 million for damages and medical expenses.

“The sum was reportedly paid by Mr. Michael Monday on behalf of Gattati community, and handed to the councillor, Japheth Sanda.

“However, dissatisfaction arose among Gattati youths, leading to allegations that the police had conspired with Barkin-Lissa to extort them.

“Upon receiving a petition, the then Commissioner of Police, Ukachi Opara, was said to have ordered the case transferred to the SCID Jalingo, for thorough investigation.

“The probe established a case of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, mischief to government property, and causing harm against both communities. Consequently, the ₦1.2 million compensation was refunded, and legal proceedings were initiated,” the statement said.

The police spokesman described allegations of a police officer extorting ₦300,000 through ASP Eric Audu’s account, as false, and intended to discredit the police.

The state police command reiterated its commitment to professionalism and justice, urging the public to refrain from spreading misinformation that could incite unrest.

It assured residents of continued efforts to maintain peace and security across the state.
