The Gombe State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading the reports circulating on social media over an incident that occurred on Tuesday morning at the Union Bank Roundabout in Gombe metropolis, insisting that no case of police brutality or extrajudicial action was involved.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the command said the incident happened at about 9:30 a.m. on December 17, 2025, during a routine traffic enforcement operation. According to the police, a patrol team intercepted a motorcycle rider for violating the ban on conveying more than two passengers on a motorcycle.
The rider, identified as Haruna Mohammed, a 42-year-old resident of Wuro Baduku, was said to be riding a red Boxer motorcycle with registration number YDB 25 VE while carrying three passengers. The police stated that while attempting to evade arrest after being flagged down, the rider sped off, lost control of the motorcycle, and collided with a tricycle, sustaining minor bruises.

The statement explained that the injured rider was immediately taken to the Specialist Hospital in Gombe, where he received medical attention and was subsequently discharged. The command stressed that the police acted promptly to ensure his safety and well-being.
The police further disclosed that following the accident, some motorcycle riders mobilised and began throwing stones at officers at the scene, leading to a brief disturbance and the temporary blockage of the major road around the roundabout. Additional police teams from nearby formations were quickly deployed, and calm was restored after the arrival of reinforcements led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations.
According to the command, normalcy has since returned to the area, one suspect has been arrested in connection with the disturbance, and residents are carrying out their lawful activities without disruption. The police maintained that claims of excessive force and misconduct by officers are unfounded and do not reflect what transpired at the scene.
The Gombe State Police Command urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports and rely on official and credible sources for accurate information, adding that investigations into the incident are ongoing and appropriate actions will be taken where necessary.
