Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare has ordered an investigation into allegations of police brutality, torture and extortion made by students of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua.
The students had staged a peaceful protest on Monday, before the state police commissioner waded into the matter and invited the protesting students to the state police headquarters in Uyo.
The Student Union Government (SUG) leaders were accompanied by the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Moses Umobong and the Dean, Students Affairs, Mr. Emmanuel Umoh to meeting with the police authorities to find lasting solutions to the students face -off with the police in the state.
A statement signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, stated that the police commissioner has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the allegations of police brutality.
The statement reads in parts: “The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, Baba Azare, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into allegations of police brutality and extortion raised by students of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua.

“In a bid to address their concerns, the commissioner of police engaged the management of the school, the Students’ Union Government (SUG), and other representatives in a peaceful dialogue aimed at fostering understanding and strengthening police-student relations.”
John explained that during the meeting, the command reaffirmed its uncompromising dedication to upholding human rights and ensuring the safety of all citizens, including students.
“The commissioner of police strongly condemned any acts of misconduct by police officers, emphasizing that any personnel found guilty of unprofessional behaviour would face disciplinary measures in accordance with the law.
“In the same vein, the command reassured students that proactive security measures were already in place to curb crime and enhance safety within the host community through intelligence-led operations.
“The commissioner of police used the occasion to emphasize the need for continuous collaboration between students and law -enforcement agencies, encouraging open communication and trust-building efforts to ensure a more secure environment,” the police added.
