The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a village head in Mbo Local Government Area after reportedly recovering an illegal firearm from his possession.
According to the police, the suspect, identified as 60-year-old Chief Edet, the traditional leader of Asik Ubofa Fishing Settlement in Effiat Clan, was arrested after credible intelligence linked him to illegal possession of a weapon.
Acting on the report, operatives carried out a targeted operation on March 24, during which they arrested the suspect and recovered an AK-47 rifle along with two empty magazines.

The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, had earlier instructed officers to verify the intelligence and take appropriate action, leading to the successful operation.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue to trace the origin of the firearm and uncover any possible accomplices.
The police also called on residents to support ongoing security efforts by providing useful information, while warning against the illegal possession of firearms.
