The Kano State Police Command has arrested no fewer than 3,081 suspects for various major crimes across the state in 2025.

The state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, disclosed this on Tuesday during the command’s end-of-year press briefing held at the Bompai Police Headquarters, Kano, where he outlined the achievements recorded in the fight against crime and the maintenance of public order.

Bakori said the arrests were carried out between January 1 and December 31, 2025, across 78 police divisions, 11 area commands, and seven tactical units, through coordinated operations involving the departments of operations, investigation, and intelligence.

He revealed that suspected thugs, popularly known as ‘Yan Daba’, constituted the bulk of those arrested, with 2,350 apprehended in connection with street violence, phone robbery and related offences, particularly within Kano metropolis.

Other suspects arrested include 146 suspected armed robbers, 50 kidnapping suspects, 112 suspected drug dealers, 85 motor vehicle theft suspects, 45 tricycle theft suspects, 83 motorcycle theft suspects, 154 suspected thieves, and 36 suspected fraudsters.

The police commissioner explained that the results followed a comprehensive security assessment conducted after he assumed office on March 17, 2025, which identified thuggery, drug abuse, kidnapping, bandit infiltration through border communities, and farmer-herder clashes as key security threats across the state’s 44 local government areas.

He said the command responded with a multi-pronged strategy anchored on intelligence-led policing, enhanced community engagement, joint border patrols with sister security agencies, capacity building for officers, expansion of the cybercrime unit, and sustained public enlightenment campaigns.

Bakori also highlighted the impact of ‘Operation Kukan Kura’, noting that the initiative had drastically reduced incidents of thuggery and mobile phone robbery.

He added that 14 kidnapped victims were rescued during the year, alongside the recovery of firearms, dangerous weapons, illicit drugs, stolen vehicles, and other criminal exhibits.

The commissioner commended the Kano State government, traditional and religious leaders, community stakeholders, and the media for their support, assuring that the command would consolidate the gains in 2026 through intensified patrols, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger community partnerships to ensure lasting peace and security in the state.
