The police in Anambra State have arrested 26-year-old Anikpe Valentine Chibuike for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Miss Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu, a 35-year-old single mother, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command, revealed that the arrest took place on January 7, 2026, by officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
The command dismissed rumours suggesting the crime was linked to individuals to whom the suspect owed money, calling such claims unfounded and misleading.
The police added that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to fatally stabbing Mmadubugwu in the neck with a knife, with the incident occurring around midnight on December 9, 2025.
“He attributed his actions to suspicions of infidelity, compounded by financial difficulties and the stress of being in debt, while trying to support the victim, leading to an emotional breakdown and the violent outburst,” the police said in its statement.

Detectives have also visited the mortuary where the victim’s body is kept as part of the ongoing investigation.
This tragic incident has sparked considerable concern regarding domestic violence and relationship-related crimes in the area.
The command encouraged the public to resolve disputes amicably and to report any early indicators of domestic abuse to avert such outcomes in the future.
SP Ikenga assured that the suspect would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of the investigation.
