Poland’s national football team has been thrown into turmoil as head coach Michal Probierz announced his resignation following a dramatic fallout with team captain and national icon, Robert Lewandowski. The shocking development comes just days after Lewandowski declared he would no longer represent the country under Probierz’s leadership.

The rift between the coach and Poland’s all-time leading goal scorer intensified after Probierz controversially stripped Lewandowski of the captaincy and handed the armband to Piotr Zielinski. The move, which stunned fans and insiders alike, triggered immediate backlash and culminated in Lewandowski’s emotional decision to step away from national duty.

Lewandowski, who has netted 85 goals in 158 appearances for Poland, made his stance public on Sunday, leaving little doubt that his relationship with Probierz had deteriorated beyond repair.

Adding fuel to the fire, Poland suffered a 2-1 defeat to Finland in a crucial World Cup qualifying match on Wednesday. The loss pushed Poland down to third in their group with six points from three games, trailing behind the Netherlands—who have the same points from one fewer game—and group leaders Finland, who top the table with seven points from four matches.

In a formal statement released shortly after the loss, Probierz confirmed his exit, saying his decision was made in the best interest of the team amid the growing unrest and public pressure. “I have concluded that my resignation is the best course of action for the benefit of the national team given the current circumstances,” he said. “Serving in this capacity has fulfilled my professional aspirations and has been the greatest privilege of my life.”

The 52-year-old, who took over in September 2023, endured a turbulent tenure marked by inconsistent performances and a disappointing campaign at Euro 2024, where Poland became the first team eliminated after finishing bottom of their group. His overall record includes nine wins, five draws, and seven losses across 21 matches.

Despite the dramatic exit, Probierz closed on a gracious note, thanking the players he worked with and pledging his continued support for the national team. “I want to thank all the players I have had the honor of working with throughout this journey. I will continue to support you all, as the national team is a shared treasure for our nation,” he said.

With Poland now facing leadership uncertainty and the absence of their most prolific player, the road to the 2026 World Cup suddenly looks far more complicated. Fans and analysts alike are now watching closely to see who steps in to steady the ship—and whether Lewandowski will ever return to wear the national jersey again.
