Former Governor and presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has condemned the recent altercation between the FCT Minister, His Excellency Barrister Nyesom Wike, and a Naval officer, describing it as a reflection of the “growing institutional disorder” in the country.
Speaking in a statement on Wednesday, Obi said what should have been a routine civic encounter instead turned into a public embarrassment, reinforcing a worrying pattern where personal authority overrides institutional norms.
He posed a series of pointed questions, warning that the incident raises serious concerns about governance and the role of security agencies:
Should the military be deployed for purely civil operations?
Even when protocols exist, is it proper for a Minister to intervene in such an indecorous manner?
Where are the boundaries between administrative authority and the duties of uniformed officers?
Why has civility given way to public spectacle, and why are officers frequently drawn into civilian disputes?

Obi stressed that such incidents set a dangerous precedent for the younger generation regarding leadership, discipline, and respect for the rule of law.
“These are not just questions about one incident—they go to the heart of how our nation is governed,” Obi said. “When public officials act beyond institutional norms, and security agencies are misused, we weaken governance and public trust.”
He further called for a national reckoning, urging that Nigeria be rebuilt into a country where institutions are stronger than individuals, public office is exercised with humility and restraint, and the dignity of uniformed officers and citizens alike is respected.
“A country that aspires to greatness and is insulted when referred to as a disgraced nation must replace the culture of impunity with law, order, and respect for due process,” Obi added, emphasizing that the titles “His Excellency,” “Distinguished,” or “Honourable” should reflect exemplary behavior at all times.
“A New Nigeria is possible,” Obi added.
