Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, acknowledging his simplicity and unwavering concern for Nigeria’s impoverished citizens. Obi made the remarks during a condolence visit to Daura, Katsina State, where he joined the third-day Islamic prayers held in memory of the late leader.
Speaking to reporters, Obi recalled a brief but impactful encounter with Buhari during his 2023 presidential campaign, describing it as a moment that left a lasting impression on him. “I wasn’t close to him, but when I met him during my campaign, he left me with a message I’ve never forgotten. He said: ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians,’” Obi recounted.
Obi described Buhari as a man whose words resonated deeply with the realities of millions of citizens. “His plea was genuine, and I believe he tried his best within his capacity to serve and uplift the poor. That appeal has continued to guide my political philosophy,” he stated.
Addressing questions surrounding his absence at the earlier prayer sessions, which had triggered speculation on social media, Obi clarified that logistical challenges prevented him from arriving sooner. “There were no available flights to Katsina, and the airport was closed due to the presence of high-profile dignitaries. But mourning continues, and my being here now still aligns with our tradition of extended prayers,” he explained.

The prayer session in Daura drew an array of prominent figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who led the federal government delegation and delivered a condolence message on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Tinubu described Buhari’s passing as a monumental loss, adding that he “will truly be missed.”
Also present were top government officials, former Attorney-General of the Federation, Islamic clerics, military leaders, and other dignitaries who joined the former president’s family and the Katsina State Government in mourning the national icon.
Although the official three-day Islamic prayer has concluded, religious leaders are expected to continue special prayers for an additional seven days in accordance with Islamic tradition, with the consent of Buhari’s family and state authorities.
