Former Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic mining disaster at the Kadauri site in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where about 100 miners are feared dead.

In a statement released on his official social media handle, Obi described the incident as a national tragedy and offered condolences to the victims’ families and the people of Zamfara. He revealed that while 15 miners had been rescued, 13 lives had already been confirmed lost, with fears that the death toll could rise significantly.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident at the Kadauri mining site, where about 100 people are feared dead. My heartfelt prayers and condolences go to the bereaved families and to the good people of Zamfara at this difficult time,” Obi said.

The Labour Party chieftain commended the Zamfara State Governor and the rescue teams for their swift intervention, urging authorities to treat citizens’ lives as the nation’s greatest resource. He stressed that the tragedy highlights Nigeria’s urgent need to regulate its solid minerals sector, enforce global safety standards, and establish rapid response mechanisms for emergencies.

“This unfortunate disaster is yet another reminder of the urgent need to secure and properly regulate our solid minerals industry with strict licensing, adherence to global safety standards, and well-equipped rapid response systems,” Obi stated.

He further called for greater transparency and prioritization of safety in mining operations across the country, noting that preventable disasters continue to claim innocent lives.

As rescue operations continue, Obi prayed that more miners would be pulled out alive and asked for eternal rest for those who perished in the disaster.
