Supporting education with the right tools and resources is not just a responsibility but a critical foundation for nation-building, says former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi. Speaking at the 16th Founder’s Day Lecture of the American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola, Adamawa State, Obi emphasized the importance of equipping students to secure the country’s future.
As the special guest of honour and keynote speaker, Obi addressed the audience on November 30, 2024, during an event marking AUN’s 20th anniversary. The university, established by former Vice President and PDP 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, served as the backdrop for Obi’s impassioned appeal for improved student support nationwide.
In a practical demonstration of his commitment, Obi revealed that he had visited an Almajiri school in Yola earlier that day and also met with students of Saint Augustine College, Mayo-Belwa. He presented them with 10 laptops and a printer to enhance their digital literacy, particularly in computer science and information technology.

“These initiatives are essential for empowering the next generation, bridging the digital divide, and fostering innovation in our schools,” Obi stated. “This is the type of commitment needed for sustainable growth and societal advancement.”
His remarks struck a chord with attendees, inspiring both students and educators with his vision of a technologically empowered youth.
Obi’s message comes at a time when education remains a cornerstone of national development. He called on policymakers and stakeholders to prioritize student empowerment as a pathway to innovation, excellence, and nation-building.
