The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, along with three other top national officers over alleged anti-party activities, in a move that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s main opposition party.
The decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) held on Saturday, November 1, 2025. According to the PDP leadership, the action was taken in line with Sections 58 and 59 of the party’s Constitution (as amended in 2017), which empower the NWC to discipline members found to have engaged in conduct detrimental to the party’s interests.
Those affected include Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary; Hon. Umar Bature, National Organizing Secretary; Barr. Kamaldeen Ajibade, National Legal Adviser; and Barr. Okechukwu Osuoha, Deputy National Legal Adviser. The officers were each suspended for one month pending further investigation by the National Disciplinary Committee.
During the suspension period, the affected officials are barred from performing their official duties. The PDP also announced interim arrangements to fill the affected positions to prevent administrative disruptions. The Deputy National Secretary, Hon. Arc. Setonji Koshoedo, has been directed to act as National Secretary, while the National Director of Legal Services will temporarily oversee the activities of the Legal Department.
Party insiders told The Trumpet that the NWC’s decision followed weeks of internal wrangling and reports of disloyalty among some national officers. The latest action is seen as part of a wider effort by the leadership to restore discipline and cohesion ahead of upcoming political activities.
The suspension has stirred reactions among party stakeholders across the country, with many calling for a transparent disciplinary process that would strengthen the PDP’s internal democracy and reinforce unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development highlights deepening tensions within the opposition party, which has faced several internal disputes since the last general election. Political analysts say the suspension of such high-ranking officers could mark a decisive moment in the PDP’s attempt to reassert control and rebrand itself as a credible alternative to the ruling party, while others say it will further tear the party apart.
