PDP slams Okpebholo, APC over alleged false claims on Benin-Asaba Road

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a scathing rebuke to Governor Monday Okpebholo and the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing them of misleading Edo people and Nigerians with what it describes as propaganda-driven governance and fabricated achievements.

In a strongly worded statement, the PDP said the Okpebholo-led government has failed to initiate any meaningful development in the state since assuming office, resorting instead to press releases, photo ops, and hollow rhetoric to mask its lack of performance. The party described the administration’s attempt to take credit for the ongoing reconstruction of the Benin-Asaba Expressway as not only deceptive but an insult to the collective intelligence of the people of Edo State.

The party clarified that the reconstruction of the critical Benin-Asaba Expressway, a strategic route connecting the South-West, South-South, and South-East was fully conceptualized and formalized under the leadership of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. In January 2024, the Obaseki administration signed a groundbreaking ₦228 billion concession agreement with Triple A Infrastructure Nigeria Limited, InfraCorp, and Africa Plus Partners as part of the Federal Government’s Highway Development and Management Initiative (HDMI).

Describing the project as a model of public-private partnership, the PDP emphasized that it was meticulously structured to drive sustainable infrastructure growth, reduce dependence on public funds, and stimulate long-term economic development in Edo and across Nigeria.

According to the PDP, the APC’s claim that the expressway project is a product of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is not only misleading but historically inaccurate. The party alleged that regulatory bottlenecks from the Federal Government had previously stalled the project until a favorable political outcome in Edo allowed for its reactivation, a move the PDP says highlights APC’s politicization of development at the expense of the people.

The PDP further slammed Governor Okpebholo for allegedly focusing on stage-managed inspection visits and choreographed media coverage rather than initiating any original infrastructure project since taking office. The party urged the governor to stop parading borrowed achievements as his own and instead rise to the task of leadership with purposeful, people-driven governance.

“Edo people are not fooled by empty headlines and rebranded projects. What they demand is leadership that delivers results, not deception,” the statement concluded.
