Senator representing Akwa Ibom North East, Albert Basset Akpan officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He joined the Young Peoples Party (YPP).
Though news of his defection broke over the weekend, he officially informed the Senate through a letter dated July 15, 2022, read during plenary on Wednesday by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.
Akpan in the letter admitted that his former party, the PDP had given him opportunities to serve in several capacities in the past but he bowed to pressure to defect because of recent happenings in the party.

He accused the party leadership in the state of shoddy handling of the last governorship election which he said was conceded to a particular candidate at the expense of democratic rights of other aspirants to contest.
He said the event leading to the primary prevented him from contesting.
“My followers advised me to resign. I’m view of the foregoing, I, therefore resign my membership of the PDP for the Young Peoples Party (YPP).
The YPP now has two senators in the Red Chamber as he joins Senator Ifeanyi Uba from Anambra State.
