The National Working Committee, NWC of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has suspended its Acting National Chairman, Amb. Illiya Damagun with immediate effect.

A statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Hon. Debo Ologunagba Friday October 11, 2024 said the NWC appointed Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the new Acting National Chairman.

The statement further said the appointment which takes immediate effect is pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).

“The NWC calls on all Organs, leaders, critical stakeholder and members of our great Party to remain focused at this critical time especially as the NWC commences arrangements towards the holding of the Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting already scheduled for Thursday, 24th October, 2024” the statement added.

In a swift move however, the Board of Trustees of PDP rising from an emergency meeting Friday sued for calm, calling on the feuding parties in the NWC to sheathe their swords for the interest of the party.

A press statement issued by the BOT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara appealed that status quo should be maintained to allow the BOT look into issues causing disaffectiom within the NWC.

“In the light of the ongoing internal crisis within the National Working Committee (NWC), the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) wishes to address the situation and provide clarity on the party’s stance.

“The BoT calls on all sides of the NWC to sheath their swords and de-escalate the tension. The warring persons must, in the overall interest of the party, revert to the status quo to preserve the unity and stability of our great party.

“We understand that disagreements may arise, but as a party with a long-standing tradition of internal democracy, we must not let these challenges derail our collective vision. The Board of Trustees will meet with the members of the NWC to intervene, foster reconciliation, and ensure that normalcy is restored in the NWC of our Great Party.

We call on all party faithful and supporters to remain calm during this period. The PDP has an effective conflict resolution mechanism, and we are confident that the current issues will be addressed and resolved in a manner that strengthens the party.

“The BoT remains fully committed to its role of promoting peace, unity, and progress within the PDP” Wabara stated.

Recall that there have been calls from different quarters in the PDP for Damagun to step aside so that the North Central whose turn it is to preside as chairman of the party can assume the position.

It is also alleged that Damagun is a lackey of the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike who has been at loggerheads with many high ranking members and officers of the party.
