The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came down hard on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, condemning what it described as the tragic state of the nation under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), following its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
In a communiqué presented by the Acting National Chairman, Amb. Iliya Damagum, the PDP NEC expressed grave concern over what it termed the “melancholic and irredeemably exploitative” governance of the APC, warning that Nigeria is sliding into a totalitarian one-party state. The party said the meeting was a turning point, reaffirming its resolve to challenge the ruling party’s failures and lead the way toward rescuing Nigeria.
The opposition party lamented the worsening insecurity under Tinubu’s watch, citing rising cases of banditry, kidnappings, and unprovoked attacks on communities. According to the PDP, the carnage spreading across Nigeria is fueled by the President’s “apparent negligence” and inability to fulfill his constitutional duty of protecting citizens.
Economic hardship also took center stage at the meeting, with the NEC blaming Tinubu’s “ill-advised and poorly executed” policies for plunging Nigerians into unprecedented poverty. The PDP cited the relentless increase in fuel prices, electricity tariffs, and multiple taxes as key triggers for business closures, job losses, and soaring crime rates, warning that the productive sector of the economy is collapsing before the eyes of a helpless populace.
Further indicting the APC-led federal government, the PDP accused the Tinubu administration of policy inconsistency, brazen corruption, budget padding, and diversion of public funds. The party noted that these vices are scaring away investors and driving Nigeria further into infrastructural decay and economic regression.

In a strong call to action, the PDP NEC demanded that President Tinubu immediately rescind what it described as anti-people policies and take decisive steps to arrest the insecurity and economic freefall facing the nation. The party also condemned what it called a desperate plot by the APC to crush opposition voices and create a one-party state using threats, intimidation, and institutional manipulation.
Despite the challenges, the PDP declared itself resilient and prepared for the 2027 general elections, affirming its belief in democracy, the rule of law, and the supremacy of the people’s will.
In a major move toward strengthening its internal democracy, the PDP NEC ratified the composition of the National Convention Committee and set the date for the convention from Thursday, August 28 to Saturday, August 30, 2025. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State was named Chairman of the Convention Committee, with Governors Ademola Adeleke and Peter Mbah serving as Vice Chairman and Secretary respectively.
Also ratified was the Zoning Committee for National Offices ahead of the convention, headed by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, with Governors Dauda Lawal and Caleb Mutfwang serving as Vice Chairman and Secretary.
The NEC further acknowledged the resolution submitted by the PDP South East Zonal Executive regarding the position of the National Secretary and resolved to deliberate on the matter during the next NEC meeting scheduled for Monday, June 30, 2025.
In closing, the PDP reassured Nigerians that the party remains strong, united, and committed to restoring hope, stability, and prosperity to the nation. According to Damagum, “The PDP is more determined than ever to lead the charge in rescuing our country from the vicious grip of the APC.”
