PDP begs Peter Obi to return to party

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has called on former Governor Peter Obi to dump the Labour Party and return to the PDP. The passionate plea was made following a strategic meeting of the party’s State Executive Committee (SEC) held in Awka, where leaders deliberated on the party’s current standing and future direction.

Peter Obi, who emerged as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the fiercely contested 2023 elections, had defected from the PDP after concluding that his political aspirations were no longer achievable within the party’s framework. However, the Anambra PDP believes the tide has turned, and that the time is ripe for Obi to come back home.

In an official statement signed by the state PDP chairman, Chidi Chidebe, the party emphasized the need to consolidate progressive forces under a unified ideological platform. He expressed deep reservations over what he described as “unsustainable coalitions” with parties lacking a shared vision, warning that such alliances could jeopardize long-term political goals.

The PDP declared that its doors remain wide open for all former and aggrieved members, singling out Peter Obi as a highly respected leader whose return could galvanize the party at both state and national levels. Describing the PDP in Anambra as “revitalized and restructured,” Chidebe extended a direct invitation to Obi, stressing that the party would be delighted to welcome him back into its fold.

This renewed push for Obi’s return comes at a critical moment, as political realignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections. With rising discontent over the state of governance in Nigeria, the collapse of the proposed coalition of opposition parties, the PDP appears keen on reclaiming its former heavyweight status by reuniting with one of its most prominent defectors.

The move has already sparked discussions across political circles, with many speculating on whether Obi, still viewed as a symbol of reform by millions of Nigerian youths, will consider returning to the platform where his political career first gained national attention.
As momentum builds and internal restructuring continues within the PDP, all eyes are now on Peter Obi and his next political move, one that could determine the future of opposition politics in Nigeria.
