Four presidential aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Peter Obi, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Mazi Sam Ohuambuwa and Dr Nwachukwu Anakwenze, converged on Abuja Saturday morning to plot how to win the party’s presidential ticket for the South-East zone.
The aspirants who are of Igbo extraction said they are ready to lobby other stakeholders in the party to ensure that the party field a candidate from the southeast in the 2023 election.
While expressing hope other aspirants will join them later, Anyim said in the interim, the four presidential aspirants have resolved to work together as a team.
On behalf of others, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim said, “we the four presidential aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the Southeast meet this morning.
“We agree to will work together to ensure that a South Easterner emerge as PDP flag bearer for the 2023 presidential election. We intend to consult with other zones on this issue and it is based on fairness and equity.
“In doing this, it is important to note that we have always supported other zones, and we now expect them to reciprocate.”
He said the parley is in line with the PDP constitution, saying “we believe that the PDP constitution favours what we are doing and we have to boldly step out with this decision.”
When asked if the aspirants are working in tandem with the Southern governors on the position that lower should rotate to the south, Anyim said “well if our position tallies with that of the Southern governors, good luck. But we are taking this position in the interest of national unity, in the interest of PDP.
” Maybe that question will go to Southeast governors forum, not to us. Whatever they are doing or whatever they are not doing is not necessarily before us. So when you meet them in their meeting, you can ask them.”
Anyim did not rule out the possibility of producing a consensus candidate among the Igbo aspirants.
He said “when we get to the bridge, we’ll cross it. But we will work together in the interest of the party, in the interest of the nation, and in the interest of the Southeast.
