The Oyo State Government has voiced its strong support for the National Economic Council’s (NEC) recommendation to withdraw proposed tax bills for further consultation and refinement.
In a statement on Sunday, the Special Adviser on Media to Governor Seyi Makinde, Mr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, emphasized the state’s alignment with NEC’s position, underscoring the need for broader stakeholder engagement to ensure the reforms are effective and equitable.
Olanrewaju said, “The council advised the President to withdraw the bills and allow for more discussions and consultations. All the governors, including my governor, Seyi Makinde, were present at the meeting, and he communicated the council’s stance.”

He clarified that the recommendation is not an outright rejection of tax reforms but a call to address imbalances and enhance their impact on citizens.
“The governor’s position is that wider consultations are necessary to make the reforms more effective and aligned with the needs of the people,” Olanrewaju stated.
When asked about the potential impact of the tax bill withdrawal on the payment of civil servants’ salaries, Olanrewaju said he could not confirm specifics but reiterated the government’s focus on ensuring fiscal policies benefit all.
