Oyo State and the nation at large are in mourning following the passing of former Governor and renowned scholar, Chief Omololu Olunloyo, who died at the age of 89—just days before marking his 90th birthday.
The news was confirmed in a statement issued by Mr. Oladapo Ogunwusi on behalf of the Olunloyo family early Sunday morning in Ibadan. The family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the public for their outpouring of support and compassion during this painful time.
Olunloyo served as the Governor of Oyo State from October 1 to December 31, 1983, under the banner of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN). Though his tenure was brief, his policies and leadership style left an enduring legacy on the state’s political and developmental landscape.
But his influence extended far beyond politics. Chief Olunloyo was a distinguished mathematician, engineer, and academic icon whose contributions to education in Nigeria remain unmatched. He was the pioneer Rector of both the Polytechnic Ibadan and the Kwara State Polytechnic, institutions that continue to shape the future of technical education in the country.

As Nigeria bids farewell to one of its brightest minds and most dignified statesmen, preparations are underway for a befitting burial that will honor the life, legacy, and enduring impact of Chief Omololu Olunloyo—a man who served not only his state, but the soul of the nation.
