A wave of outrage has swept through Nigeria as a disturbing video surfaced online showing students of Unity Model School in Asaba, Delta State, writing their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) using flashlights due to lack of electricity.

The viral clip, recorded by a concerned woman who chose to remain anonymous, captured the heartbreaking moment students struggled to complete their exams in near-total darkness. According to her, the exam was scheduled to begin at 2 PM, but shockingly, the papers did not arrive until 6 PM, forcing the students to begin their tests well into the night.

By then, daylight had faded, and the school, plunged in darkness, had no alternative power supply. Students were left with no choice but to use the flashlights on their phones or handheld torches to illuminate their answer sheets.

“It’s not OK,” the woman lamented in the video, expressing disbelief that such conditions could still exist in 2025. She recalled her own school days, saying that even in the era of lanterns, students were never subjected to such indignity during a national exam.

The video has ignited anger across social media, with many Nigerians calling out the Delta State Ministry of Education and the WAEC board. Critics argue that the incident not only highlights severe infrastructural deficiencies but also reflects a deep-rooted neglect of public education in the state.

This shocking development has sparked questions about how prepared schools are for national exams and whether students in government-owned institutions are receiving fair and equal opportunities compared to their counterparts in private schools.

As the backlash grows, education stakeholders and advocacy groups are demanding urgent intervention to ensure such a disgraceful scenario never repeats itself.
