The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) announced a steep increase in passport fees, effective from September 1. The revised fee structure has sparked outrage among citizens already grappling with economic challenges.
Under the new regime, Nigerians will now have to pay a hefty N50,000 for a 32-page passport booklet with a five-year validity, up from the previous N35,000. For those opting for the 64-page booklet with a ten-year validity, the cost has surged from N70,000 to a staggering N100,000.
The NIS justified the hike, claiming it was necessary “to maintain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport.” However, many Nigerians view the increase as yet another burden on their pockets, especially in a time of rising inflation and economic uncertainty.

Kenneth Udo, Deputy Comptroller of Immigration and NIS spokesman, assured that the fee hike would not affect those applying for passports outside Nigeria. “While the Nigeria Immigration Service regrets any inconvenience this increase might cause prospective applicants, we remain committed to transparency and quality service delivery at all times,” Udo stated.
Despite these assurances, the news has ignited a firestorm on social media, with many questioning the timing and rationale behind the increase. As the September 1 deadline approaches, all eyes will be on how the government responds to the growing backlash from its citizens.
