Popular Turkish sports analyst, Veli Yigit, has advised Galatasaray to rest Victor Osimhen for Saturday’s Istanbul derby against Basaksehir, noting that the Nigerian striker deserves recovery time after a demanding international break with the Super Eagles.
Osimhen featured prominently in Nigeria’s back-to-back victories during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic, playing a total of 170 minutes across both fixtures. The forward, however, did not complete either game, showing visible signs of fatigue.
According to Yigit, the 26-year-old has been one of manager Okan Buruk’s most trusted players when fully fit, but the recent international workload could affect his performance and increase the risk of injury. “I don’t think Osimhen should start in the Başakşehir match. He has gone through a demanding period and is tired from his national team duties,” Yigit said.
He also recommended that Mauro Icardi be given the starting role to regain confidence ahead of Galatasaray’s crucial UEFA Champions League clash with Bodo/Glimt next week.
“Osimhen has been through an intense few weeks. Resting him now will help maintain his fitness for bigger challenges,” Yigit added.

The pundit further praised Osimhen’s improved attitude, noting that the striker appears more settled and focused at the Turkish club. “I see Osimhen very happy. His full focus is now on Galatasaray. He no longer worries about transfers or contracts. That mindset is key to his success, and I believe he will soon deliver top performances again.”
So far this season, the Super Eagles star has been directly involved in seven goals, scoring six and providing one assist, in just nine appearances for both club and country, underlining his importance to Galatasaray’s campaign in both domestic and European competitions.
With fans eagerly anticipating the derby, Yigit’s comments have sparked debate among supporters over whether resting Osimhen could be the key to preserving his form for the long season ahead.
