David Olofu, a prominent ally of former Governor Samuel Ortom, has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The former Commissioner for Finance and Budget, who served from 2015 to 2023, made his decision public in a press briefing on Wednesday in Makurdi, stating that his resignation took effect on June 30, 2025.
Olofu addressed his resignation letter to the PDP Chairman of Edikwu Ward 2 in Apa Local Government Area, emphasizing his desire to embrace political freedom and align with a movement that reflects his vision for inclusive development. He described the decision as one made not out of personal interest but in pursuit of a greater political purpose for the people of Benue South Senatorial District and the entire state.
Throughout his eight-year tenure, Olofu not only managed Benue’s finances but also played a vital role at the national level. From 2019 to 2023, he served as Chairman of the Forum of State Commissioners for Finance in Nigeria, giving him a national platform to influence fiscal policy and advocate for stronger subnational economies. His expertise has made him one of the most respected technocrats in Northern Nigeria’s political space.
In his resignation statement, Olofu reaffirmed his constitutional right to freedom of association, asserting that the time had come to move in a new direction. He explained that his exit from the PDP would allow him to contribute more meaningfully to his community through a broader coalition that champions reforms, accountability, and inclusive governance.

“This decision allows me to freely associate with others, as guaranteed by our Constitution,” Olofu stated, stressing that his move is designed to reflect the evolving political aspirations of his constituents. He described his resignation as being in the best interest of Edikwu Ward 2, Apa LGA, and the broader Benue region, signaling a pivot toward a more progressive political alliance.
Olofu, who has also served as Senior Technical Adviser to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, is now spearheading a new political coalition in Apa Local Government Area. Leveraging his extensive network and administrative experience, he plans to drive community-focused development and attract transformative investment into Benue.
As the 2027 general elections draw near, Olofu’s departure from the PDP and leadership in this emerging coalition could have far-reaching implications for political alignments in the Middle Belt. His exit also raises questions about potential shifts among other PDP loyalists in Benue State, especially those aligned with the Ortom political structure.
