The Orlu Elders Council has declared its full support for the planned nationwide protest on October 20 calling for the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Kanu has remained in detention despite several court rulings ordering his release, a situation that has continued to stir public concern across the Southeast and beyond.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by Professor F.C. Duke (Chairman), Professor A.U. Awuzie (Vice Chairman), and Professor Protus Nathan Uzoma (Secretary), the council said it fully backs the peaceful protest organized by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and other civil society groups.

The elders urged Nigerians, especially those who believe in justice and the rule of law, to join the protest and demand Kanu’s freedom through lawful and non-violent means.
“The Orlu Elders Council stands in solidarity with Ohanaeze Ndigbo and all individuals and groups peacefully advocating for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release, guided by the principle that an injury to one is an injury to all,” the statement read.
The council emphasized that the demonstration must remain peaceful, noting that maintaining discipline would strengthen the credibility of their cause and show their commitment to democratic values.
They also expressed hope that the federal government would respect judicial decisions and release Kanu in the interest of peace and national unity.
