OpenAI has announced a strategic move to leverage Google Cloud’s infrastructure for its flagship AI product, ChatGPT, marking a major shift in its cloud strategy as demand for its artificial intelligence services continues to skyrocket. This expansion adds Google to a growing list of OpenAI’s cloud providers, including Microsoft, Oracle, and CoreWeave, as the company seeks to scale computing power to match global user growth.

This decision signals a significant development in the evolving dynamics between OpenAI and Microsoft.

While Microsoft was once OpenAI’s exclusive cloud partner, the relationship has gradually shifted, with Microsoft now labeling OpenAI as a competitor in the booming AI market. Both companies currently offer enterprise-focused AI tools and subscription services, targeting the same developer and business segments.

With Google now in the mix, OpenAI has confirmed that ChatGPT and its API services will be hosted across multiple cloud platforms. Google Cloud infrastructure will support these operations in key global locations, including the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom. The partnership is a notable victory for Google, whose cloud division trails behind Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure but is gaining traction through high-profile AI collaborations. Google already powers Anthropic, an AI company founded by former OpenAI executives.

The multi-cloud approach reflects OpenAI’s urgent push to overcome capacity bottlenecks, especially as its AI models become more complex and user demand explodes. Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly acknowledged the company’s limitations in GPU availability. In a widely shared post on X, Altman appealed for immediate access to Nvidia GPUs in “100k chunks,” underscoring the scale of demand the company is facing.

In March, OpenAI secured a nearly $12 billion, five-year deal with CoreWeave to bolster its cloud compute capabilities. And in a previous agreement, Oracle teamed up with Microsoft and OpenAI to connect Oracle’s Cloud Infrastructure with Microsoft Azure, adding yet another layer to OpenAI’s growing compute arsenal.

Meanwhile, Microsoft maintains exclusive rights to OpenAI’s application programming interfaces (APIs), even as it shifts to a new model where it has first-refusal rights rather than full exclusivity on additional compute needs.

With AI adoption reaching record highs and enterprise applications of ChatGPT continuing to expand, OpenAI’s pivot to Google Cloud is poised to further accelerate the global reach and responsiveness of its tools. Analysts say this move reinforces OpenAI’s commitment to a multi-cloud ecosystem, ensuring resilience, flexibility, and scalability as it races to stay ahead in the competitive AI landscape.
