Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 Ebonyi State election, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, describing him as a statesman Nigeria needed now more than ever. Odii lauded Onu’s legacy as a leader, patriot, and advocate for integrity and progress in Nigerian politics.
In a statement released on Friday, Odii highlighted Onu’s remarkable life, noting that he left “an indelible mark on the sands of time.” As the first Executive Governor of old Abia State, Onu laid the groundwork for the state’s development, leaving a lasting legacy in both infrastructure and governance. “He was a prolific writer and purveyor of knowledge who contributed selflessly to the nation’s progress,” Odii remarked.

Odii also praised Onu for his pivotal role in Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, specifically mentioning his decision to relinquish his presidential ticket in favor of Chief Olu Falae. “Onu redefined ‘politics without bitterness,’ embodying a commitment to principles and ideology over personal gain,” Odii noted. He highlighted that Onu’s steadfast loyalty and integrity made him a model politician, admired for never defecting from his party, regardless of external pressures.
As Nigeria’s longest-serving Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Onu demonstrated impeccable service, with no accusations of misconduct ever tarnishing his record. “Neither the EFCC nor the ICPC ever found cause to investigate him, a testament to his trustworthiness and honesty,” Odii emphasized, adding that Onu’s impact as an Igbo leader and a Nigerian patriot will be celebrated for generations.
