Ondo State has proposed a death penalty for anyone convicted of kidnapping as part of its efforts to eliminate the crime in the state.
Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, made this announcement on Saturday, following the weekly meeting of the state executive council, which was chaired by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Ajulo indicated that the proposal would soon be sent to the state House of Assembly for legislative consideration.
He stated that “kidnapping and cultism pose significant threats to public safety and order, and enhancing the legal framework will help deter these crimes and improve overall security.”
Additionally, Abiola Olawoye, the governor’s Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Lands, and Housing, announced that the council has approved the construction of two major dual-carriageway road projects in the state.
The first project involves a 24.75-kilometer dual carriageway from Ugbeyin Junction to Okitipupa Market, OAUSTECH, Ugbonla Junction, and Igbokoda Jetty.
This road will feature a 9.3-meter wide carriageway on each side, a 1.2-meter median, concrete drainage systems, walkways, asphalt shoulders in undeveloped areas, a 3-meter utility area, and solar-powered streetlights along the median.

It will also include modern traffic lights at key intersections and is designed to accommodate heavy traffic with a reinforced pavement.
The second project is a 6.7-kilometer dual carriageway from Supare Junction to Akungba along the Ikare Road in the Akoko area.
This project has similar specifications, including a 9.3-meter carriageway on both sides, a 1.2-meter median, reinforced concrete drainage, walkways, a 3-meter utility area, solar-powered streetlights, and traffic management systems, all built to support heavy vehicle movement.
Furthermore, the council has approved the installation of 6,000 standalone solar streetlights across the three senatorial districts—2,000 each for Ondo North, Ondo Central, and Ondo South, as part of the state’s initiative to enhance safety and public lighting infrastructure.
