Former President-General of the Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU), Joe Omene, has expressed his support for Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori appointing an Okpe indigene as chairman of the state sports commission.

Omene, who spoke on Friday, November 15, 2024, during a television interview, argued that previous governors followed similar practices, asserting that there is no reason to criticize the governor for doing same.

“When Uduaghan was governor, he made his brother chairman of the sports council. When Okowa was there, he also appointed his brother chairman. So, what is wrong if Oborevwori puts an Okpe man there?”

“I read recently on social media that one of Okowa’s brothers resigned because he was not appointed chairman. These issues should not overshadow the good work the governor is doing,.” Omene said.

While acknowledging Gov. Oborevwori’s achievements in office so far, he stated that “it’s still too early to assess whether he has fully performed, but so far, he has made some impacts”.

Omene however, pointed out that much of the development projects carried out by the state government had been concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural communities neglected.

“The governor should go and open all Okpe rural areas. Let there be accessible roads to all Okpe communities so people can bring their farm produce to the towns.

“When you empower one Urhobo man, that one will empower 10 others, and those 10 will empower a 100. That is how you develop peoplez” he advised.
