Nigeria’s aviation sector has recorded another milestone as the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, has been elected Vice President of Airports Council International (ACI) Africa. The historic election also secures her a permanent seat on the ACI World Governing Board, marking a major leap in global recognition for Nigerian aviation leadership.
Her ratification took place at the 34th ACI Africa General Assembly in Lusaka, Zambia, where aviation leaders from across the continent gathered. ACI Africa, with 56 member states, is the voice of African airports, advocating for safety, innovation, and stronger connectivity. The global governing board, which she now joins as a permanent member, oversees more than 2,100 airports in 169 countries.
Kuku, who previously served as Regional Advisor for Africa, described the new role as an immense honor and pledged to champion reforms that will redefine aviation across the continent. “Being elected as Vice President of ACI Africa is an incredible honor, one that I do not take lightly. I am committed to collaborating with my colleagues to ensure that our airports not only meet international standards for safety and efficiency but also serve as critical drivers of economic growth and connectivity for our nations,” she said.
Her rise to this global platform comes at a time when Nigerian airports are undergoing transformation under her leadership. Kuku has spearheaded infrastructure upgrades, repositioning strategies, and policies aimed at improving safety, sustainability, and service delivery. Her track record of excellence, coupled with a strong background in aviation and finance, places her at the forefront of tackling Africa’s most pressing aviation challenges.
Beyond Nigeria, her appointment signals a new chapter for Africa’s aviation sector. Kuku is expected to drive initiatives that will not only modernize airports but also boost regional and global connectivity, creating opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment.
Her recognition on the world stage reflects both her personal commitment and Nigeria’s growing influence in global aviation. With her election as Vice President of ACI Africa and her new role on the ACI World Governing Board, Kuku is set to play a defining role in shaping the future of African airports.
