The people of Okpai Kingdom in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State have officially announced the death of their traditional ruler, Igwe Ugbome II, whose 61-year reign remains one of the longest in the kingdom’s history.
The announcement was made alongside the enthronement of his first son, Prince Chukwumeke Ugbome, as the new Uwaoma of Okpai Kingdom, marking a smooth transition in line with long-standing tradition.
The colourful coronation ceremony, held on December 22, 2025, at Okpai Oluchi, drew traditional rulers, chiefs, community leaders, women and youth groups, as well as political leaders from within and outside Ndokwa East.
Speaking at the event, the new monarch described his ascension as a call to service, pledging to lead with humility, fairness, and inclusiveness.
He assured the people that peace, unity, and development would remain the guiding principles of his reign, while vowing to sustain the legacy of his late father.
“My leadership will be about service, not intimidation. I will stand with my people and protect our collective interests,” he said.

Paying tribute, Princess Joyce Akpaluku, the late monarch’s daughter and Ochiaga of Okpai Oluchi, said the succession followed the customs of the kingdom, noting that the title Uwaoma symbolises peace and a good life for the people.
Other speakers, including Chief Obiajulu Nduka and leaders of the Ndokwa East Local Government Area, described the enthronement as a historic moment that reinforces unity and continuity in Okpai Kingdom.
They expressed confidence that the new Uwaoma would consolidate peace and drive development, while prayers were offered for wisdom and strength to guide his reign.
