The recent arrest of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has ignited a storm of reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape. Okowa, apprehended in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on November 4, 2024, faces serious allegations of financial misconduct during his tenure, with claims he diverted over N1.3 trillion, including Delta State’s 13% derivation fund from 2015 to 2023.

According to EFCC sources, the former governor is under investigation for allegedly misusing state funds in excess of N1.3 trillion. These allegations include accusations of misappropriating N40 billion to acquire shares in UTM Floating Liquefied Natural Gas and reportedly channeling funds into personal projects, including starting a bank and backing his 2023 presidential campaign.

Delta State’s All Progressives Congress (APC) hailed the EFCC’s actions, viewing the arrest as a significant step towards rooting out corruption. The Delta APC urged the EFCC to continue investigating other former governors across the country, underlining their commitment to accountability and transparency. In a statement issued by the public relations officer of the party, he applauded EFCC for the bold step, stressing its the right step towards recovery of the Delta stolen fund.

In contrast, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) condemned Okowa’s arrest, suggesting it could be a politically motivated move aimed at weakening the PDP’s influence in Delta State. Party representatives have voiced concerns that the EFCC’s actions might be part of a broader strategy to undermine opposition figures ahead of future elections.

The arrest has set social media ablaze, with citizens and political observers deeply divided. While some applaud the EFCC’s efforts, others question the timing and motives behind Okowa’s detention. Many fear that political agendas could be overshadowing genuine efforts to curb corruption.

As of November 6, 2024, Okowa remains in EFCC custody in Port Harcourt, where investigators are reportedly grilling him for further details. This high-profile case has heightened interest in anti-corruption efforts across Nigeria and brought renewed scrutiny to the allocation and usage of state funds.
