Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called for stronger collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government to reposition Nigeria’s automotive industry for global relevance and sustainable growth.

The governor made the call on Monday while declaring open a retreat of the House of Representatives Committee on Industry and the National Automobile Design and Development Council (NADDC), held in Asaba. Represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Johnson Erijo, Oborevwori described the gathering as both timely and strategic in Nigeria’s push to revive its industrial base and diversify the economy.

Speaking on the theme, “Building a Global Competitive Automotive Sector in Nigeria through Effective Executive–Legislative Partnership,” he emphasized that the automobile industry remains one of the strongest engines of economic expansion worldwide, driving innovation, employment, and allied sectors such as steel production, ICT, and petroleum refining.

He noted that Delta State’s development blueprint under the MORE Agenda aligns with the retreat’s objective of fostering industrialization and manufacturing. According to him, effective legislation must go hand-in-hand with consistent executive action to create an ecosystem that supports local production, infrastructure development, and youth empowerment.

“The objective of this retreat resonates with our vision of accelerating industrial growth in Delta State,” Oborevwori said. “Legislative incentives for local manufacturers and executive commitment to policy stability, ease of doing business, and protection of indigenous industries must work together to make Nigeria’s automotive sector globally competitive. We can and must build an industry that empowers our youth and conserves foreign exchange.”

The governor reaffirmed that subnational governments play a vital role in driving national industrial reform. He stated that Delta State is already fostering an investor-friendly environment through infrastructure renewal, public–private partnerships, decentralized energy projects, and improved peace and security.

Highlighting Delta’s advantages, he pointed out the state’s coastal location, abundant natural resources, and four seaports, which he said provide major logistical opportunities for industrial and export-oriented investment. “Beyond our mineral wealth, Delta’s strategic geographic position linking the South-South, South-East, and South-West regions makes it a natural gateway for commerce and industry,” he added.

Oborevwori expressed confidence that the retreat’s deliberations would produce actionable outcomes capable of reshaping the automotive sector. Declaring the event open, he urged participants to enjoy Asaba’s cultural and tourist attractions while contributing meaningfully to the discussions.

“Together, we can build a future where Nigeria’s automotive industry becomes a symbol of national pride, technological excellence, and economic sustainability,” he concluded.

Earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee on Industry, Hon. Enitan Badru, commended the Delta State Government for hosting the retreat and reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to strengthening executive-legislative collaboration for the growth of Nigeria’s industrial and automotive sectors.
