Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed profound sadness over the death of Punch Newspaper Correspondent, Mr. Matthew Ochei, describing the incident as a major setback to journalism in the state and the country.
Mr. Ochei, who hailed from Ukunzu in Aniocha North Local Government Area, reportedly passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, following a brief illness. He was aged 43.
In a condolence message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori extended his sympathies to the bereaved family, members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, and the wider media fraternity.
The Governor noted that the late journalist was widely respected for his professionalism, courage and unwavering commitment to ethical journalism, adding that his contributions to public awareness and accountability would be deeply missed.
According to Oborevwori, Ochei distinguished himself as a hardworking reporter whose passion for truth and responsible reporting earned him admiration within and outside the journalism profession.

“This is a sad and painful loss. Delta State and the media industry have lost a diligent and principled journalist who served the public with dedication and integrity,” the Governor stated.
He described Ochei’s death as untimely, stressing that it has created a void not only in his family but also among his colleagues and readers who depended on his reports.
Governor Oborevwori prayed for God’s comfort and strength for the Ochei family, friends and professional associates, asking that the Almighty grant them the grace to bear the loss.
He also assured the NUJ and media practitioners in the state of the solidarity and support of the Delta State Government during the period of mourning, while praying for the peaceful repose of the soul of the departed journalist.
