Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas have paid glorious tributes over the death of elder statesman and retired military officer, Major General Paul Ufuoma Omu.

General Omu, who passed away at the age of 85, was hailed as a patriotic Nigerian, a disciplined leader, and a revered figure whose life symbolized service, sacrifice, and national unity. His passing marks the end of an era of principled leadership and unwavering dedication to the Nigerian nation.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori described the late General Omu as “a man of impeccable character, discipline, and wisdom” whose leadership left an indelible mark on Delta State and beyond.

“General Paul Omu was not just a distinguished military officer; he was a beacon of hope and a true son of Delta,” Oborevwori said. “His contributions to the unity and progress of our country, especially during his tenure as Military Governor of the defunct South-Eastern State, will remain etched in our national history.”

Extending heartfelt condolences to the Omu family, the Igbide Kingdom, and the entire Isoko nation, the Governor noted that while the state mourns his departure, there is also cause to celebrate “a life dedicated to the service of God, country, and humanity.”

Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, representing Delta South Senatorial District, also paid an emotional tribute, describing the death of General Omu as a deeply personal loss. He referred to the late elder statesman as a mentor and father figure who significantly influenced his life and career.

“For me, this loss is profound,” the Senator said in a statement issued from the National Assembly. “General Omu was more than a leader; he was a guiding light whose wisdom, discipline, and selflessness shaped the lives of many. His leadership style reflected integrity, justice, and unwavering patriotism.”

Senator Joel-Onowakpo recounted General Omu’s inspiring journey from his humble beginnings in Oteri, Igbide Kingdom, to his rise as one of Nigeria’s most respected military officers. He praised the General’s role in preserving Nigeria’s unity during the Civil War and his admirable leadership as Military Governor of the South-Eastern State.

“He was a bridge-builder, a man whose legacy transcends politics and military service. He stood for values that uplift society—honour, humility, and accountability,” the Senator added.

Both leaders extended their deepest condolences to General Omu’s widow, Senator Chief (Mrs.) Stella Omu, his entire family, and the people of Isoko. They prayed for God’s strength for the bereaved and eternal rest for the departed icon.

As Delta mourns, tributes continue to pour in from across the country, honouring a man whose life of service left footprints in Nigeria’s political, military, and communal landscape. General Paul Ufuoma Omu’s legacy will continue to inspire generations across the state and the nation.
