Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, on Friday commissioned a suite of academic facilities at the University of Delta (UNIDEL), Owa-Alero Campus, reinforcing his administration’s emphasis on broadening access to quality higher education across the state.

Facilities inaugurated include the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences Complex—named in honour of the governor—the Faculty of Environmental Sciences building, the Faculty of Engineering lecture hall and workshops, a 500-seat central auditorium, and a fully equipped central library.

Addressing stakeholders at the event in Owa-Alero, Oborevwori described the commissioning as a significant milestone that complements the administration’s visible investments in roads and bridges with sustained funding for education and health.

He stressed that modern learning infrastructure is essential to preparing students for innovation, research and enterprise, urging undergraduates to safeguard the facilities and use them responsibly. “Our objective is to equip students with skills that enable them to compete globally and create jobs,” he said.

The governor recalled his role, as former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, in the establishment of UNIDEL alongside two other state universities. He explained that the expansion was necessitated by admission constraints faced by Delta State University, following limited quotas approved by the National Universities Commission.

He commended the immediate past administration for initiating the university and thanked the NUC and officials who facilitated approvals for the three institutions, describing the feat as uncommon. Oborevwori also expressed appreciation for the decision to name the management and social sciences complex after him.

Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, praised the continuity in education policy, noting that UNIDEL’s growing student population—now about 15,000—has helped expand opportunities for youths and promote social stability.

Commissioner for Higher Education, Nyerhovwo Tonukari, provided technical details of the projects, stating that the Sheriff Oborevwori Complex includes a 250-seat auditorium, lecture rooms, offices, a student resource centre and media facilities. He added that the environmental sciences faculty comprises multiple auditoriums, classrooms, studios, offices, a faculty library and seminar spaces, while the engineering complex features fully equipped workshops and studios. The central library seats 426 students.

Vice-Chancellor, Stella Chiemeke, described the developments as a reflection of people-centred leadership, saying the new facilities would enhance training in disciplines vital to Delta State’s socio-economic growth.

Also speaking, Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Council, Hon. Monday Odigwe, said the projects underscore balanced development and align with the practical implementation of the state’s MORE Agenda.
