Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has officially approved the payment of the new minimum wage to all employees in Delta State, effective from October 2024. This landmark decision is set to provide much-needed financial relief to thousands of workers in the state.
The announcement was made by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, during a meeting with the leadership of Organized Labour in Delta State. The meeting included representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC). According to Emu, the meeting was convened under the directive of Governor Oborevwori to discuss the implementation of the new wage structure.
Dr. Emu stated that, although there were initial delays due to the awaited chart from the National Income Salaries and Wages Commission, the governor has now ordered the immediate commencement of payments.
“Despite some unresolved aspects of the consequential adjustments, the governor directed us to go ahead with the payment because he understands the challenges faced by the workers. As a labor-friendly governor, he is committed to easing the financial strain on the people,” Emu emphasized.

“Governor Oborevwori has shown he stands by his word. Many doubted his promise, thinking it was political rhetoric, but today he has proved them wrong by delivering on his commitment. The labor movement in Delta State is grateful for his leadership and dedication to workers’ welfare,” Ofobruku said.
This development has been met with widespread applause across the state from workers, as they prepare to benefit from the long-awaited minimum wage adjustment.
