Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has blasted President Bola Tinubu over the persistent collapse of the national electricity grid, saying the situation runs contrary to the president’s campaign promise to deliver stable power supply.
Obi, in a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, expressed concern that the national grid had collapsed twice in January 2026 alone, barely weeks into the year.
He recalled that during the 2022 electioneering campaign, Tinubu pledged to provide steady electricity within his first four years in office or forfeit a second-term ambition.
“President Bola Tinubu’s campaign promise in 2022 was clear: If I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term,’” Obi said.
He added that the recent grid failures raise serious concerns, noting that the grid reportedly collapsed about 12 times in 2025.
“In January 2026 alone, the national grid has already collapsed twice, and the month is not even over.
‘This reality sharply contradicts the promise and should worry every patriotic Nigerian,” he stated.

Obi also referenced the president’s ongoing state visit to Türkiye, comparing Nigeria’s power generation capacity with that of the European country.
According to him, Türkiye, with a population of about 87 million, roughly one-third of Nigeria’s population, generates and distributes over 120,000 megawatts of electricity, while Nigeria continues to struggle with less than five percent of that figure.
“Our appeal is simple: stay at home and confront the nation’s problems,” Obi said, adding that Nigeria’s critical infrastructure challenges deserve urgent attention.
He further urged Nigerians to prioritise accountability and responsible governance rather than focusing solely on future elections.
Recall that the national electricity grid collapsed on Tuesday, marking the second system failure within four days in January 2026, leading to widespread power outages across the country after generation reportedly dropped sharply.
