In a strategic effort to foster ethical journalism from an early age, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has announced the revival and strengthening of press clubs in secondary schools across Abuja.
The initiative is aimed at equipping students with foundational journalism skills and values while promoting media literacy and civic responsibility.
Speaking during an interactive session held at Government Secondary School (GSS), Garki, the Vice Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Yahaya Ndababo, emphasized the importance of building professionalism in journalism from the grassroots.
“Our goal is to promote professionalism from the grassroots by empowering students with journalistic skills and values early on,” Ndababo stated, adding that the move is part of a broader campaign to raise a generation of ethical, informed, and socially responsible media practitioners.

As part of this renewed commitment, the union will officially launch the Press Club Revival Project on Thursday, 24th July 2025, starting with two pilot schools in the FCT.
The initiative is a flagship component of the upcoming 2025 NUJ FCT Press Week.
Representing the leadership of GSS Garki, the Press Club Matron, Mrs. Udofia Unyime, lauded the move, describing it as a “timely and visionary effort” that will ignite and shape students’ interest in journalism and public affairs.
“This initiative will inspire many of our students to take up journalism not just as a career, but as a calling to serve society ethically,” she said.
The Press Club Revival Project also aligns with the NUJ’s mission to defend press freedom, promote media development, and nurture democratic ideals at all levels of society.
This year’s Press Week, themed “Journalism in a Changing World: Press Freedom, Media, Democracy, and the Society,” will feature a series of engagements including workshops, advocacy visits, and student-led press activities.
With this grassroots-focused initiative, the NUJ FCT Council is setting the stage for long-term transformation in Nigeria’s media landscape by instilling journalistic values in young minds at the secondary school level.
