The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has initiated discussions aimed at strengthening capacity building and mentorship opportunities for its members through a proposed strategic collaboration with the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD).
The development emerged on Tuesday when the NUJ FCT leadership paid a courtesy visit to the Centre’s management in Abuja.
Welcoming the delegation, the Executive Director of Centre LSD, Mr. Monday Osasah, expressed the organisation’s willingness to work closely with the NUJ FCT Council in promoting leadership development, accountability, and good governance.
Mr. Osasah explained that the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development, founded in 2003, was established to equip citizens with the capacity to drive societal transformation.
He said, the Centre’s operations focus on addressing three major gaps: the absence of strategic leadership, inadequate strategy formulation, and ineffective leadership structures.
“The Centre operates a leadership school that provides free training programmes. So far, 3,211 individuals have benefited, with training centres currently functioning in Benin, Warri, Port Harcourt, and Abakaliki,” he disclosed.
He further noted that the organisation also runs customised international training programmes, stressing that effective governance begins with a clearly defined mission and proper institutional accreditation. He added that government policies are more impactful when leaders understand and apply sound strategic frameworks in implementation.
Osasah reaffirmed the Centre’s readiness to collaborate with the NUJ FCT Council in the training, retraining, and mentorship of journalists to enhance professional and leadership competencies.
Responding, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, stated that the Council remains open to partnerships that promote societal advancement while strengthening ethical and responsible journalism.
“We believe the media plays a critical role in amplifying initiatives that promote good governance, leadership development, and sustainable progress across the continent,” she said.

She highlighted the Council’s interest in working with Centre LSD to equip members with leadership skills necessary for greater professional impact.
“We are aware that the Centre is a non-profit organisation committed to building strategic leadership for sustainable development in Africa, with strong emphasis on governance, leadership, strategy, and development. These are areas that closely align with the media’s responsibility in promoting accountability, public enlightenment, and national growth,” she added.
Comrade Ike further stated that the Council is keen to understand the Centre’s programmes and expectations to establish a structured and mutually beneficial partnership.
“We are open to developing a practical framework that clearly defines the scope of collaboration, media engagement, and long-term cooperation between Centre LSD and the NUJ FCT Council,” she said.
The meeting was attended by members of the Centre’s management team, who also made contributions on potential areas of synergy to foster strategic cooperation between both organisations.
