The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic killing of Arise Television anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, during a violent armed robbery at her Katampe residence in Abuja on Monday, September 29, 2025.
In a statement signed by the council’s Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, on Tuesday, the NUJ described Maduagwu’s death as a “devastating loss” to her family, Arise News, and the Nigerian media industry at large.
“Somtochukwu was a brilliant, passionate, and dedicated broadcaster whose professionalism and poise endeared her to colleagues and viewers alike.
She represented the best of a new generation of Nigerian journalists, bold, ethical, and committed to the truth,” the statement read.
The NUJ FCT Council said her death was a painful reminder of Nigeria’s worsening security situation and called on the police and other security agencies to launch a thorough forensic investigation into the incident.
It urged authorities to ensure that those behind the “heinous crime” are swiftly tracked down and prosecuted.

While condoling with Maduagwu’s family, colleagues, and the management of Arise Television, the union said her memory should serve as a rallying point for Nigerian journalists to uphold the values she lived by — integrity, excellence, and service to society.
“Though her life was brief, her impact was profound. May her legacy continue to inspire courage and truth in journalism,” the statement added.
The NUJ further urged journalists nationwide to remain united and vigilant, even as the media community continues to mourn the loss of the 29-year-old broadcaster.
