The Bayelsa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has congratulated Bayelsa– born Blessing Oborududu, a 2021 Tokyo Olympic silver medalist and 14-time African Wrestling Champion, who bid farewell to the mat after 19 years of triumph.
The union also commended her for winning a gold medal in her final match at the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State recently.
The state NUJ Chairman, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha on behalf of the union praised her professionalism, resilience and never-defeated spirit and impact on the sport.
The NUJ notes with delight that Oborududu’s most memorable achievement was winning Africa’s first-ever Olympic Women wrestling medal in Tokyo.

The NUJ described her career as remarkable and inspiring and urged Oborududu not to relent even in retirement by providing mentorship to the younger generation of wrestlers from both Bayelsa State and at the national level.
Meanwhile, the NUJ hascongratulated the government and people of Bayelsa State for Team Bayelsa’s third place finish at the just concluded National Sports Festival.
It however, called on the National Sports Commission to investigate the sudden declaration of hosts, Ogun State as the second placed team behind Delta State in the overall medals table.
“Council notes that Team Bayelsa was placed second during the closing ceremony but surprisingly after the event had been declared closed, another medals table surfaced with Ogun State placed in second position ahead of Team Bayelsa despite the huge gap Bayelsa had over the hosts in the table,” the union added.
