The Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) has granted full accreditation to 24 academic programmes of the University of Calabar (UniCal), marking a significant milestone for the institution.

This development was communicated in a formal letter issued by the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, to the Vice Chancellor of UniCal, Prof. Florence Obi, on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

The accreditation results are the culmination of a thorough and meticulous evaluation process that took place between October and November 2024.

The evaluation assessed the quality of education, faculty qualifications, infrastructural adequacy, and the overall learning environment offered by the university.

With this full accreditation, these 24 programmes will be authorised to operate autonomously for a period of five years, following which they will be subject to another comprehensive assessment to ensure they continue to meet high academic standards.

In addition to the 24 fully accredited programmes, six additional programmes have achieved accredited status, indicating their adherence to the required educational benchmarks.

Furthermore, two programmes have been granted interim accreditation, which is valid for two years, after which they will undergo reevaluation.

The NUC underscored that the accreditation process is a testament to the university’s unwavering commitment to upholding rigorous academic standards.

It emphasised the importance of a well-structured curriculum and continual improvements in infrastructure to support student learning and development.

The NUC also advised prospective students to diligently verify the accreditation status of their chosen programmes.

It cautioned that any programme lacking proper accreditation would face significant restrictions on admissions, and graduates from such unaccredited programmes would not be eligible for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Among the programmes awarded full accreditation are accounting, banking and finance, public administration, and medical laboratory sciences.

Other accredited fields include philosophy, English and literary studies, and a range of scientific disciplines, reflecting the university’s diverse academic offerings and its dedication to equipping students with relevant and recognized qualifications.
