The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval for the establishment of the Faculty of Law at the Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), marking a major milestone in the institution’s rapid academic growth.
The approval followed a resource verification visit by a panel of NUC experts to assess the university’s preparedness and availability of both human and material resources for the new programme.
In a letter dated November 10, 2025, and addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, the NUC stated: “I am directed to inform the vice-chancellor that the executive secretary has considered and approved the establishment of a full-time mode of the LL. B law programme to be run in the main campus of the university with effect from the 2025/2026 academic session.
“The university is enjoined to provide human and material resources for the development and growth of the approved programmes in line with the provisions of the core curriculum and minimum academic standards for the Nigerian university system.”
The establishment of the faculty of law represents another landmark achievement under the leadership of the acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Otoabasi Akpan.
Within just three months in office, Prof. Akpan has successfully launched the faculties of communication and media studies—comprising six new departments—and computing and information technology, which houses five departments.
