In a major boost to Nigeria’s education sector, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval for 28 full-fledged degree programmes at the newly upgraded Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano. The institution, formerly known as the Federal College of Education, Kano, is set to commence these independent degree courses starting from the 2025/2026 academic session.
The approval, confirmed in a statement by the university’s Academic Secretary, Comrade Dr. Auwalu Yakasai, marks a significant milestone in the institution’s transition from a college of education to a full-fledged university. The NUC’s decision follows a rigorous resource verification exercise conducted by a team of experts, during which the university reportedly scored a perfect 100 percent in terms of academic preparedness, facilities, and qualified personnel.
Among the newly approved programmes are Bachelor of Education degrees in Adult and Continuing Education, Primary Education, Social Studies and Civic Education, Early Childhood Education, and Business Education. The university will also offer Bachelor of Arts in Education degrees in Islamic Studies, Christian Religious Studies, History, English, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Arabic, French, Creative Arts, and Fulfulde.

For science-oriented students, the university has secured approval for Bachelor of Science in Education degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Integrated Science, Agricultural Education, Home Economics, Human Kinetics, Political Science, Economics, and Geography.
Dr. Yakasai noted that this landmark approval means the university will discontinue its National Certificate in Education (NCE) programme from the 2024/2025 academic session. He encouraged candidates who had earlier applied for NCE programmes to take advantage of the new development by logging onto the JAMB portal and using the Green Card to switch their applications to the degree programme of their choice.
This transformation positions Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education as a key player in the advancement of teacher education and capacity building in Nigeria. It also aligns with the federal government’s broader agenda of expanding access to quality university education across the country.
