The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has intercepted a massive operation involving the theft of 70,000 litres of crude oil in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The crackdown, carried out by the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CGS SIS), dealt a significant blow to oil thieves operating in the Niger Delta region.

According to a statement released in Abuja on Monday by the NSCDC National Public Relations Officer, Afolabi Babawale, the operation was part of a broader effort to combat pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, and illegal dealings in petroleum products.

Babawale revealed that the elite squad swiftly acted on an intelligence tip-off, tracking down and impounding a long caravan truck equipped with an in-built tank, which was fully loaded with stolen crude oil.

“The truck was intercepted in transit near the Eleme flyover in Elelewon, Port Harcourt, and was immediately seized by operatives of the CGS SIS,” Babawale confirmed.

The NSCDC spokesperson cited the Squad Commander, AS Dandaura, who disclosed that upon arrival at the scene, operatives found a red-head, navy-blue container truck with registration number AGL574XY.

“The truck was fully loaded with crude oil siphoned from vandalized wellheads and damaged pipelines. However, the occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled as our operatives closed in,” Babawale added.

He further stated that the seized truck, along with its illegal cargo, had been taken into custody while an investigation was underway to apprehend the syndicate behind the crime.

Babawale reiterated that the NSCDC remains committed to dismantling oil theft rings and ensuring that perpetrators face the full wrath of the law.

“The seized truck and its contents will be forfeited following due legal process. Proceeds from the sale will be remitted to the Proceeds of Crime Account (POCA),” he stated.

The CGS SIS Commander reaffirmed that the NSCDC would continue to intensify its crackdown on oil thieves and their sponsors, warning that anyone caught would face prosecution.

This latest interception highlights the growing efforts of security agencies in curbing the multi-billion-naira oil theft industry that has long plagued Nigeria’s economy. With operations like this, the NSCDC is sending a strong message to criminals that their days are numbered.
