The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the commencement of a four-day mandatory refresher training for all Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) staff, alongside a confirmed 95 percent salary increment set to take effect before the end of 2025.

The disclosure was made by NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, in Abuja on Sunday after a meeting with AKTS staff at Idu Station. Opeifa presented findings from the investigation into the August 26 derailment, reviewed the progress of recovery efforts, and outlined strategies for the safe resumption of passenger services on the critical rail corridor.

According to him, safety remains the corporation’s top priority. He explained that the refresher programme, starting Monday, September 22, will sharpen staff operational knowledge, improve compliance with standard procedures, and prevent safety lapses in future.

“The investigation showed the need for strict adherence to operational directives, especially caution orders. This training is designed to reinforce discipline and ensure our staff are fully prepared for service resumption,” Opeifa stated.

He further cautioned workers against complacency, warning that a culture of safety is non-negotiable for the NRC, particularly given the strategic role of the Abuja–Kaduna corridor in national transportation.

On staff welfare, the NRC boss confirmed that the long-awaited 95 percent salary increment has been approved and will be implemented before the close of 2025. He also urged workers to show restraint in industrial disputes, cautioning locomotive drivers against resorting to strike threats.

The measures, combining safety reforms and improved welfare, are expected to boost staff morale while reassuring passengers of safer, more reliable train services along Nigeria’s busiest rail corridor.
